Did you know that the Chow Chow, one of America’s most beloved furry friends for pet lovers across the country, has a unique and interesting history in our nation? The breed itself is centuries old, having existed as far back as 206 BC in China.

With its recognizable bear-like characteristics and fluffy coats of fur, it was no wonder why they eventually made their way to North America – with sails and ships bringing this fuzzy pup across the pond to be cherished by eager families!

In today’s post, we’ll take a look at how exactly these lovable pets ended up on our shores, plus delve into some fascinating facts about their growth and popularity over time here in the United States. So curl up with your cuddly companion and get ready for an intriguing journey through time about one of nature’s best doggy creations – the Chow Chow!

What is American Chow Chow?

American Chow Chow is a unique dog breed native to the United States. Bred and developed by settlers in what is now known as the Appalachian Mountain region, these dogs have an unmistakable look.

The most recognizable trait of an American Chow Chow is its thick, soft coat that can be one solid color or a combination of two. Additionally, they also have a large head with a broad muzzle, drooping ears, short legs, and a curled tail that sits atop their back.

While usually calm and collected, American Chow Chows can make excellent guard dogs if given proper training and socialization throughout their life. Plus, because of their pleasant attitudes, these pooches often make great companions for people who are willing to invest the time it takes to properly take care of them.

When did the chow chow come to America?

The chow chow originally originated in China over 2000 years ago and was used as a working dog to pull and guard. In the 1800’s the breed slowly started becoming known around the world and made its way to America at that time.

It quickly became popular among upper-class Americans due to their noble appearance and loyalty, which saw breeders in America begin producing larger numbers of chow chows by the mid-19th century. Today, they are a recognizable breed throughout the United States and around the world, but it all began with them making their way across the ocean more than 100 years ago!

Can you have a Chow Chow in the United States?

You may have seen a Chow Chow’s distinctively fluffy coat, distinctive black tongue, and curled tail popping up all over social media lately – but despite their growing popularity, Chow Chows are not native to the United States. They are an ancient Chinese breed that was used as multi-purpose guard dogs, livestock herders, and hunting dogs.

Fortunately for American canine lovers, it is very possible to find a Chow Chow in the US through adoption or purchase. Most potential owners will be struck by just how much dedication and time goes into taking care of a pet Chow: they’re notoriously independent, slow to learn commands (even basic ones), require daily brushing due to heavy coats; and training should start as young as possible.

However, devoted owners who can meet these needs will find that they have a loyal companion in a truly unique breed of dog.

Were Chow Chows used in war?

Chow Chows have been around for centuries, but did you know they were also used in war? These adorable little bundles of fur and loyal companions may not look like fearsome fighters, but they actually played a role in World War II.

The Chinese government recruited some Chow-Chow dogs to help carry supplies into dangerous areas during the War of Resistance. They weren’t exactly the bravest members of the War effort – rather than soldiers risking their lives, it was these four-legged friends who carried ammunition into battle and delivered messages safely.

While their contributions may not have been as big as other troops on the field, Chow Chows are still seen as a symbol of bravery and perseverance for their sacrifice to help fight for freedom.

To Sum it up

The Chow Chow is an iconic breed with a rich history and a devoted fan base. Their popularity persists today, with enthusiasts and even celebrities flocking to own a Chow Chow of their own.

While there is still much to be learned about the breed’s origin in the United States, it is certain that they have left their mark on the world of dog fanciers everywhere. With its unique characteristics, alert temperament, and unique physical traits, the Chow Chow has captured hearts around the world and is sure to continue doing so for many years to come!

Thank you for learning all about this amazing canine companion!
